Keeping Isopods as a Clean-Up Crew

Isopods are the unsung heroes of modern reptile keeping. These small land crustaceans — you will know their garden cousins as woodlice or pill bugs — are nature’s recyclers, and in a vivarium they become a tireless clean-up crew, quietly eating the waste, mould, shed skin and dead plant matter that would otherwise pile up. Add a thriving colony to a living enclosure and much of your cleaning routine simply disappears. This guide explains what isopods do, which species to choose for which setup, and how to keep a colony that not only survives but breeds and spreads for years.

They are also genuinely rewarding to keep in their own right. Many hobbyists start isopods purely as a bioactive clean-up crew and end up with shelves of colourful cultures, because they are cheap, fascinating, low-maintenance and — once you understand the handful of things they need — remarkably hard to fail with.

What isopods do

Isopods are detritivores: they eat dead and decaying organic matter. In a vivarium that means fallen leaf litter, rotting wood, spent plant material, animal droppings, uneaten feeder insects and the skin your reptile sheds. As they feed they break all of this down into finer material that microbes and plants can use, and their constant burrowing aerates the soil. In other words, they turn waste into healthy substrate and keep the whole system from stagnating — the living engine at the heart of any bioactive terrarium.

Crucially, they do all this without bothering a healthy animal. Isopods are not predators or parasites; they ignore your gecko or frog entirely and simply clean up after it. They work alongside springtails, which handle the finer jobs — mould, algae and microscopic decay — that isopods are too large to graze. Together the two make a complete clean-up crew, and it is worth keeping both.

Meeting the crew: species to know

“Isopod” covers hundreds of species, and they are not interchangeable. Some stay tiny and hidden and breed like wildfire, making perfect invisible janitors; others are large, colourful and better suited to a display culture; a few are drought-tolerant for arid setups. Choosing the right one for your enclosure is most of the battle, so here are the ones you are most likely to meet.

For a first clean-up crew under a tropical species, you cannot go far wrong with dwarf whites or powder blue isopods — both are fast, forgiving and prolific, and both stay busy without becoming a nuisance. Save the slow, showy Cubaris for when you have caught the bug and want a culture to admire in its own right.

Match the pod to the habitat: humidity-loving dwarf whites will struggle in a bone-dry desert vivarium, and drought-hardy Armadillidium won’t thrive in a swampy tropical one. Pick a species whose natural preference matches the enclosure you are seeding, and it will establish itself with almost no help from you.

What isopods need

Whether you keep them in a standalone tub or loose in a vivarium, isopods want the same handful of things. Get these right and a colony looks after itself.

A moisture gradient

This is the single most important thing to understand. Isopods breathe through gill-like structures and need humidity, but they will drown or rot in a permanently soaking enclosure. The answer is a gradient: keep one side of the enclosure damp and the other side drier, and let the isopods move between the two to regulate themselves. Most tropical species are happy at roughly 60–80% humidity across that range. A damp corner of sphagnum moss and a drier, leaf-littered end is all it takes.

Substrate and leaf litter

Give them a few centimetres of moisture-holding substrate to burrow into — a coir-based bioactive soil mix with sphagnum moss and orchid bark is ideal. On top goes a generous layer of dried leaf litter (oak, beech or magnolia), which is not just shelter but their staple food. Add a piece or two of cork bark and some rotting hardwood; the isopods will shelter beneath it and slowly eat it, and it gives you somewhere to lift and check on the colony.

Warmth

Room temperature suits most species perfectly — somewhere around 20–24 C. They will tick along cooler and breed faster warmer, but there is rarely any need to heat a culture kept in a normal living space. Avoid direct sun or a hot windowsill, which can cook a small tub alarmingly quickly.

Calcium and the occasional protein

Here is the detail that catches people out. Isopods have crustacean shells and need a steady calcium source to moult and reproduce; without one, a culture slowly dwindles and eventually crashes no matter how well fed it is otherwise. Keep a piece of cuttlebone, some crushed eggshell or oyster shell in the enclosure at all times. Alongside their leaf-litter staple they will also take small amounts of vegetable (carrot, courgette, squash) and an occasional pinch of protein — fish flakes or dried shrimp — which boosts breeding. Go easy on the protein, though: too much is the usual cause of pest outbreaks, as we’ll see.

Starting and growing a colony

You do not need many isopods to begin. A starter culture of ten to thirty individuals is plenty; from there, given stable warmth, a moisture gradient, calcium and leaf litter, they simply breed continuously. Expect the first few weeks to look quiet — a small colony spends its early life hidden and establishing — before the population climbs, slowly at first and then, once numbers build, quite rapidly. Patience is the whole trick. Resist the urge to dig around checking on them; leave the tub alone, keep the conditions right, and let time do the work.

Seeding a vivarium

To put isopods to work as a clean-up crew, add your starter colony to an already-assembled, planted enclosure and then wait before your pet moves in. The isopods need time to spread through the substrate, find the leaf litter and start breeding, so that there is a working population in place before it has to cope with a reptile’s waste. Two to four weeks is the usual establishment window, longer for bigger enclosures. Keeper’s tip: Seed generously and feed the crew directly at first — a little squash, a pinch of fish flakes — even before your animal arrives. A well-fed founding colony breeds faster and establishes a bigger workforce, so it can keep pace from the day your pet produces its first mess.

Troubleshooting

Most isopod problems trace back to moisture or food, and both are easy to correct. If your colony is dwindling, dying off or simply not breeding, the enclosure is most often too dry — restore the damp side of the gradient and check there is leaf litter and calcium available. If instead you notice a bloom of tiny mites or a haze of fungus gnats, you are almost always overfeeding, especially with protein-heavy or grain-based foods; scale the feeding right back until the pest population collapses, and let a healthy springtail population outcompete them. A full culture crash, with numbers falling and never recovering, usually means a missing calcium source or a habitat that dried out; both are simple to put right on the next culture.

A word of caution on the hungriest species: the large, powerful Porcellio types are magnificent cleaners but, kept short of food, have been known to nibble tender plant roots or bother very soft-bodied or immobile animals. Will isopods hurt my reptile or its eggs?

How many isopods do I need to start?
